From Judgments to Journeys

Embracing Differences and Empathy

Reading time: 2 minutes

The servant who conceals the faults of others in this world.

Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection.

There is a famous story about a woman known to all to have an ill reputation.

Yet, in the depths of her soul, there burned a flicker of goodness and a glimmer of remorse for the life she led.

One scorching afternoon, as the sun beat mercilessly down the streets, she stumbled upon her destiny.

There, lying in the dirt, panting desperately for a sip of water, was a stray dog, its eyes pleading for mercy.

In that moment, something stirred within her heart.

She filled her cup with water with trembling hands and offered it to the parched creature.

As the cool liquid trickled down its throat, a sense of peace washed over her, and tears rose in her eyes.

She found redemption and hope amidst the darkness in that simple act of kindness.

Little did she know that her compassionate act had reached the Most Merciful.

For her selfless act, her past transgressions were washed away like sand scattered by the wind, and Paradise awaited her with open arms.

We all share a common journey marked by our weaknesses, struggles, and the pursuit of drawing closer to Allah.

Each of us is at a different stage of this personal journey.

Some may have mastered the external aspects of faith before delving into the internal, while others progress in the opposite direction.

When we feel guided and firmly on the right path, it can be tempting to perceive faults in others and entertain a sense of superiority.

However, it's crucial to recognize the privileges that have shaped our journey.

Perhaps we were blessed with supportive parents, a nurturing environment, or influential mentors.

These blessings, bestowed by the grace of Allah, have contributed to the individuals we've become.

Despite our circumstances, our guidance ultimately originates from Allah alone.

Our ability to perform acts of worship, embody righteousness, and navigate our spiritual paths are all gifts from the Divine.

It’s important to consider our perception is limited when we witness others engaging in sinful behavior.

While we may observe disobedience, we cannot predict if those acts will lead them to repentance or a change of heart.

Conversely, our acts of obedience may inadvertently lead us to arrogance if we succumb to a sense of superiority.

Casting judgment holds no benefit, whether outwardly expressed or harbored within our hearts.

Approaching them from a place of superiority only alienates and distances us from those who are part of our larger humanity.

It blinds us to the potential wisdom and goodness that each person carries within.

Every person has inherent value cultivated from their own unique experiences.

By remaining humble in this regard, we can seek sources of inspiration and insight from everyone and everything around us.

Indeed, a single act of kindness from them may hold more weight in the sight of Allah than our most fervent prayers.

Consider the profound lesson in the story of the prostitute who extended kindness and quenched a dying dog's thirst.

These stories remind us that divine favor transcends outward appearances, and God's love transcends our human judgments.

Indeed, there are souls among us whom Allah holds dear, whose inner light shines brightly in His eyes.

Umar (RA) was known to be prideful and arrogant before accepting Islam.

But Allah loved him even then and elevated him to a position where he helped thousands of others.

So let us refrain from passing judgment, for only Allah knows the seals of our hearts.

Our task is not to rank or categorize others but to approach each person with humility and openness, recognizing the potential goodness and wisdom in every soul.

Through this lens of compassion, we truly honor the diversity and richness of Allah's creation.

Du’a of the Day

In this section, we will share one du’a that can be used in your daily devotions and share its meaning.

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Transliteration:

Al-hamdu lillahilladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur

English Translation

All praise belongs to Allah, Who has restored us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him shall we return.

Explanation

Sleep is a type of death because the mind and movement disappear with it. In the state of sleep, the soul is separated from the body. When a person wakes up, Allah returns the soul to the body.

Through this dua, we express gratitude and renew our intentions to Allah, who resurrected us after giving us a temporary death and returned our souls.
