If he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.

Many dig their graves with their teeth.

Eating habits profoundly impact our health and well-being, with overeating often as a barrier to vitality. This issue extends beyond the simplistic advice of "eat less to avoid obesity." It's a complex problem with roots that are not solely physical.

Our relationship with food often transcends mere physical nourishment. Many of us eat to fill voids in our lives, seeking emotional sustenance. This can become problematic when we lose touch with our senses and fail to recognize when we've had enough. Overeating then shifts from a means of sustenance to a form of self-punishment.

From infancy, our understanding of food is intertwined with our mothers, imprinting a deep connection between nourishment, comfort, and emotional fulfillment. Overeating can be a pursuit of these feelings – a chase for a sense of wholeness that might have been lacking.

In Islam, we believe Allah is closer to us than our mothers. While we may intellectually acknowledge this, the challenge lies in truly feeling and embodying this belief. The remedy is not just physical knowledge but a profound inner understanding nurtured through the presence, mindfulness, and remembrance of Allah.

Our task is to cultivate a heightened awareness of ourselves and our bodies. This awareness goes beyond engaging in physical activities like yoga or martial arts. It's about recognizing our bodies as gifts from Allah, vessels that require care and respect.

Moreover, societal norms that glorify excess often skew our perception of needs. In contrast, many primitive societies, with their limited diets, enjoyed better health than those today with access to abundant organic foods and nutrients.

The Prophet ﷺ exemplified a lifestyle of moderation in eating. His diet was characterized by limited consumption, not just for physical health, but as a practice of spiritual discipline. He taught us the importance of balance – eating enough to sustain oneself without excess.

This approach to eating is not merely about weight management; it's a holistic practice for a healthier life spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Reflecting on our eating habits and striving for balance in all life aspects can help us control overeating and lead a more fulfilling life.
