Guarding our Awareness

Lessons from a Bowl of Milk

Reading time: 2 minutes

The best of provision is God-Consciousness (Taqwa).

A young man deeply committed to his spiritual studies approached a shaykh seeking guidance on how to guard his gaze better and remain less distracted by worldly matters.

Recognizing the young man's sincere desire for growth, the shaykh proposed a unique challenge: to carry a bowl brimming with milk across town without spilling a single drop, under the watchful eye of a servant who would publicly berate him for any spillage.

The young man undertook the task with intense focus, each step carefully placed and every movement made with utmost precision.

He completed it without incident.

Returning to the shaykh, he was ready for the next lesson, but instead, the shaykh asked him to recount the route he took and what he noticed along the way.

Confused, the young man admitted that he had not paid attention to his surroundings, including prominent landmarks like the huge perfume store or the obscene stores that lined the marketplace.

He was too absorbed and focused on preventing the milk from spilling.

With a knowing smile, the shaykh shared the more profound lesson from this experience.

He explained that the bowl of milk represents his actions and intentions while the servant beside him represents the angels sent to record all of our actions.

The shaykh highlighted that true taqwa involves a profound awareness of Allah and one's moral and spiritual responsibilities, similar to the young man's diligent attention to the milk bowl and each step taken, effectively shielding him from being distracted.

This level of mindfulness, the shaykh concluded, is essential for controlling our gaze, actions, and even our thoughts, leading to a life of authenticity and God-consciousness.

The essence of Taqwa lies in realizing that Allah is always watching and nurturing an intimate relationship with Him that transcends worldly distractions.

This constant awareness blossoms into an unwavering sense of responsibility.

One becomes more insightful about the consequences of their actions.

The real measure of Taqwa is our internal transformation, which is then reflected in our outward actions.

Embarking on this journey is not meant to be effortless; instead, it is inherently challenging and demands an enduring consciousness of our Creator.

As we deepen our trust in Allah and strengthen our taqwa, the path becomes more discernible, and our steps are more assured.

This endeavor, though demanding, is ultimately fulfilling as it aligns our hearts with divine will and brings us to true contentment.

Du’a of the Day

In this section, we will share one du’a that can be used in your daily devotions and share its meaning.

Transliteration:

Allahumma ati nafsi taqwaha wa-zakkiha anta khayru man zakkaha anta waliyuha wa-mawlaha.

English Translation

O Allah, give my soul (nafs) its God-fearing righteousness and purify it, for You are the best to purify it. You are its Protector and its Guardian.

Explanation:

The Nafs is not just the seat of desires but also the battleground where one's higher aspirations and lower impulses conflict.

True piety and fear of God are qualities Allah Himself bestows, not merely the results of human effort.

Purification of the soul is a divine process. Humans can undertake actions and cultivate intentions conducive to purity, but ultimate purification comes from Allah

With this we place our spiritual well-being entirely in His hands, trusting in His perfect guardianship and protective grace.

Day 213

Misinformation alert

News is spreading about a ceasefire deal. Please read this before sharing anything 👇

What we know right now is that Hamas stated that it accepted a proposal for a temporary truce.

🚫 But this doesn’t mean Israel will confirm its final acceptance. In fact, an anonymous Israeli official just told @reuters that what Hamas accepted was a “softened” Egyptian proposal which Israel won’t accept.

Israel’s Channel 12 says that Israel is studying it and will issue an official response.

Details about the proposals are not public.

This is a developing story, so please don’t jump to conclusions, celebrate, or spread misinformation.
