Check Your Heart Like Umar
- And do not claim yourselves to be pure. He is most knowing of who fears Him.
There's a moment that perfectly captures something extraordinary about Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)'s character.
A moment so awkward, so unnecessarily honest, that it makes you wonder why anyone would put themselves in such a position.
The Prophet ﷺ has just shared one of the most profound statements about faith ever uttered: "None of you truly believes until he loves me more than his family, his wealth, and even himself."
The companions are listening.
Most nod in agreement, perhaps reflect silently, maybe even feel a warm surge of devotion.
But not Umar.
Instead, you can almost see him doing mental mathematics right there in front of everyone.
"Let's see," he begins, completely unfiltered, "I definitely love you more than my wealth—check.
I love you more than my family—absolutely, check."
Then comes the pause that must have made everyone hold their breath.
"But wait a minute, Ya Rasulallah... I'm not sure I can honestly say I love you more than myself yet."
Can you imagine the collective intake of breath?
Here's a man who could have simply kept quiet, nodded along, and figured it out privately later.
But Umar's relationship with truth was so pure, so uncompromising, that lying, even by omission ,simply wasn't an option.
The Prophet ﷺ's response was gentle but clear: "Your faith isn't complete until I am more beloved to you than your own self."
Now here's where most of us might have panicked or offered a quick, "Oh yes, of course you are!"
But Umar?
He went home and turned his honesty into a practical exercise.
He began running scenarios in his mind with the intensity of someone preparing for the most important test of his life.
"If an arrow were flying toward the Prophet ﷺ, would I throw myself in front of it, or would I instinctively duck and run?"
He didn't just imagine the heroic version; he honestly examined what his gut reaction would be in that split second of terror.
"When Allah blesses me with something good, am I genuinely happier than when Allah blesses His Prophet ﷺ with something good?"
Again, not the answer he wished he could give, but the answer his heart actually felt.
The next day, Umar returned to the Prophet ﷺ with the confidence of someone who had done the inner work: "I swear by Allah, you are now more beloved to me than myself."
The Prophet ﷺ smiled, that beautiful, knowing smile, and said, "Now you're there, Umar."
Consider the revolutionary nature of this approach in our era of carefully curated social media personas and image management.
How often do we say "Alhamdulillah" when we're actually frustrated?
How often do we claim to "trust Allah's plan" when we're secretly resentful about our circumstances?
Umar's example suggests a different path:
What if we got so comfortable with acknowledging our inner reality and spiritual shortcomings that we could actually do something about them?

👶 SunnahStories

A leopard proud, so bold and bright, Admired his spots in morning light. His fur was gold, his spots so fine, “No beauty here can match with mine!” A fox named Kareem, small and red, With clever eyes, he shook his head. **“Oh friend, it’s not just looks that shine, For wisdom lasts beyond our time.”** The leopard scoffed, **“You talk in vain! My beauty’s worth brings me great gain.”** But as they walked, a sound drew near— The hunters' steps! A cause for fear! The fox leapt quick, so light and sly, | The leopard stood, his posture tall, Hoping looks would save him all. The hunters gasped, **“What stripes, what gold! A prize to take, a sight to hold!”** The leopard ran, his heart so fast, But soon he found his strength won’t last. When all was safe, the fox appeared, The leopard sighed, his pride now cleared. **“Oh Kareem, you were truly right, For wisdom wins, not fur so bright.”** So learn from this, both girl and boy, It’s not your looks, but what’s inside. For beauty fades, but wisdom stays, And guides you through the darkest days. |
Reflection Questions:
1️⃣ Why did Azhar think his beauty was his greatest strength?
2️⃣ How did Kareem stay safe from the hunters?
3️⃣ What mistake did Azhar make?
4️⃣ What does Islam teach us about inner character versus outer appearance?
5️⃣ Can you think of a time when wisdom helped more than looks?
