How can an all-powerful and merciful Allah allow such pain and suffering?
This question is not unique to Muslims.
People of all faiths, and even those who reject faith altogether, struggle with evil and suffering in the world. It is a topic that philosophers and theologians have grappled with for centuries.
As Muslims, we are taught to be thankful for the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us. But how can we truly appreciate these blessings without acknowledging the pain and suffering that exists in the world?
There are the two great calamities that can befall us - hunger and war. Alhamdulillah, many of us living in the comfort of the West do not have to worry about these calamities. But we need to understand the pain and suffering that others endure.
We must take on their cause, feel their pain, and strive to make a difference.
In our current times, many young Muslims are questioning why our Ummah is facing so much suffering. They wonder why our blood is the cheapest and our dignity the lowest.
When Allah announced to the Angels that He was creating humans, the Angels were perplexed. They questioned why Allah would create a species that would cause so much evil and shed blood. Even the Angels, more intelligent and pure than us, could not comprehend this.
Allah's response was simple - "Verily, I know that which you do not know."
We must trust Allah's wisdom and knowledge, even when we don't understand.
But the Quran provides some insights into the purpose of pain and suffering.
One of the main reasons is for us to recognize and turn to Allah. When we are in times of grief, anxiety, and pain, our du’a becomes more sincere and powerful. We raise our hands to Allah with humility and seek His help. It is during these times that we rediscover the importance of prayer and worship.
Living a comfortable life can sometimes make us forget the higher calling of worshiping Allah. But when calamity strikes, we are reminded of our dependence on Him. We turn to Him in prayer and seek His mercy. The purpose of pain and suffering is to awaken our souls and remind us of the importance of our relationship with Allah.
Allah never criticizes us for turning to Him in times of tragedy. He encourages it so that we can find the sweetness in our deeper spiritual connection.
But it is important to remember that Allah also criticizes neglecting Him after the tragedy is over.
We must not forget Him once the pain subsides.
We may never have a complete answer to the question of why pain and suffering exist, and that is okay.
We must trust Allah's wisdom and knowledge, even when we don't understand.
And be thankful for our blessings, and remember those who are suffering.
May Allah ease the pain of our brothers and grant us the ability to make a difference.
