Three at the Table, Two in the Conversation

If you have ever smiled through a conversation full of people you have never heard of, we hope someone eventually explained who Uncle Farooq was.

And why the whole table was laughing about his suitcase.

A guest can be welcomed into a house and still spend an evening outside the conversation. We have probably been that guest; we may also have been the ones enjoying the suitcase story.

The Prophet ﷺ gave this instruction for three people sitting together, until others are present too. That particular situation helps us notice the hurt we might otherwise overlook.

At our own tables, we can notice the person who has stopped asking for context. A sentence explaining the story may be enough to help them enjoy it with us.

We do not need to turn to the guest and announce that they are very quiet. That can make a cup of tea feel suddenly like an interview.

Some people enjoy listening. We can give them the context and an easy opening, then let them decide how much they want to say.

And if something needs a confidential conversation, we can arrange a suitable moment. Someone else's private concern can stay private while we remain considerate of the person beside us.

At your next gathering, pause long enough to explain the first inside story before the newcomer has to ask.

The Game With No Instructions: an original fictional story for families

Yusuf and his cousin Sami had a marble game with rules they had made up themselves. A marble could be a boat, a fish, or a very dangerous potato.

Their new neighbor Bilal sat down beside them.

"Watch out for the potato," Sami told Yusuf, and both cousins laughed.

Bilal looked at the marbles. He had no idea which one was the potato, or what made it dangerous.

He asked once. The cousins were busy deciding whether a fish could jump over a boat. After that, Bilal stayed quiet.

Yusuf noticed that Bilal had put his hands in his pockets.

"We made this game up," Yusuf said. "We forgot to tell you the rules."

He placed a green marble in front of Bilal and explained what it could do. Sami showed him the starting line.

"And the potato?" Bilal asked.

"It steals your turn," said Sami.

Bilal considered this. "Can it become chips?"

The cousins looked at each other. That was a rule they had never thought of.
