DAILYREFLECTION
The merciful are shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens.
What happens inside you after an hour of watching people suffer on your phone?
If you come away heavier and less able to help anyone, there's a reason for that, and it isn't weakness.
Feeling someone's pain as if it were your own is exhausting. The heart can only carry so much of it before it starts to close, and a lot of what we call numbness is a heart that was simply overloaded.
Compassion works differently. When you shift from feeling their pain to wanting them to be well, and doing something about it, the weight starts to lift. People trained in that shift felt less distress and more warmth, and it drew on a different network in the brain.
The Prophet ﷺ told us to be merciful on the earth, and promised that mercy would come back to us from above.
So what does mercy look like on a heavy day? A meal dropped at a door. A donation with a name in your du'a. A call to the friend whose family is over there.
One small act turns the heaviness into something that helps.
First step: the next time you close a news app today, do one merciful act for someone within reach before you open anything else.
Reflect on this: When did my sadness last turn into something I did?
