DAILYREFLECTION

❝

You see the believers as regards their being merciful among themselves and showing love among themselves and being kind, resembling one body, so that, if any part of the body is not well then the whole body shares the sleeplessness (insomnia) and fever with it.

The last time a small infection knocked you down, it probably wasn't the small part that hurt most. It was everything else: the heavy arms, the heat in your face, the way you couldn't stay awake on the couch.

That's the body doing exactly what it was made to do. When one part is in trouble, it sends word to the brain, and the whole system changes course. Your appetite fades. Your temperature rises. You're pulled toward sleep so your energy can go to fighting it off.

One finger gets sick, and the whole body stays home with it.

The Prophet ﷺ chose this picture for us. The believers, he said, are like one body: when one part is unwell, the rest of it loses sleep and runs a fever too.

The body never weighs whether the finger deserves the trouble. It answers because the finger belongs to it.

So when someone in your family, your masjid or down your street is hurting, a healthy heart feels some of it. You lose a little sleep. You move a plan around. You give up an evening to sit with them.

A body that feels nothing when a hand is crushed is in danger, and so is a heart that has stopped feeling the people around it.

First step: tonight before you sleep, text one person you know is going through something and ask how they're really doing.

Reflect on this: When someone near me hurts, how much of it do I let myself feel?
