Rich in the Next World
You prefer the life of this world, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Sometimes the people closest to us hide their struggles so well that when we finally see the truth, it breaks our hearts.
This is what happened when Umar (RA) walked into the Prophet's ﷺ home and witnessed poverty so stark it left him weeping.
Umar (RA) entered the Prophet's ﷺ house and found him sitting on a haseer—a simple mat made of palm branches.
This wasn't just where the Prophet ﷺ sat during the day; it was everything.
At night, he would unfold it to sleep on.
During the day, he would fold it up to sit on.
When guests came, they would sit beside him on the same mat, with maybe a cushion placed between them.
That was it.
That was all his furniture.
But what shattered Umar (RA) wasn't just the simplicity; it was the cost.
When the Prophet ﷺ stood up from his mat, Umar (RA) could see the marks pressed into his skin from the rough palm branches.
There was nothing between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and those harsh fibers except his simple waist wrap.
No comfortable mattress.
No soft bedding.
Just the imprint of branches on the body of the most beloved person to Allah.
Umar (RA) looked around the room, perhaps hoping to find signs of comfort hidden elsewhere.
Instead, his eyes found: a handful of barley in one corner, a few leaves scattered nearby, and a water skin hanging on the wall, barely containing enough water for basic needs.
This was the complete worldly inventory of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ.
Umar (RA) couldn't contain himself.
This was a man who had seen poverty, who understood struggle, but this was different.
This was the chosen one, the beloved of Allah, living in conditions that would make anyone weep.
"Why are you crying, O Ibn al-Khattab?" the Prophet ﷺ asked gently.
"Ya Rasulillah, how can I not weep?
That mat has left marks on your body, and this is all you've accumulated.
I can't see anything in this room except these few things, while Kesar and Caesar live among gardens and rivers.
You are the Prophet of Allah, the chosen one, the beloved one. You deserve these things so much more than they do!"
The Prophet ﷺ could have accepted the sympathy.
He could have agreed that life was hard.
Instead, he offered Umar (RA), and through him, all of us, a completely different way of seeing:
"Aren't you pleased, O Umar, that for them is the dunya, and for us is the akhirah?"
This wasn't just consolation.
This was a fundamental reorientation of values.
The Prophet ﷺ was teaching us that we are a people of the hereafter.
People who strive for the riches and wealth of the next world, not those who become distracted and preoccupied with the wealth of this one.
Years later, Aisha (RA) would carry the weight of these memories in a way that transformed her experience of even basic comfort.
Every time she ate a full meal after the Prophet's ﷺ death, she would begin to cry.
"Why are you crying, O Mother of the Believers?"
"I don't eat any food without crying because I remember how the Prophet ﷺ left this dunya.
By Allah, he never ate his fill of bread and meat twice in the same day.
He never had two full meals in a day."
When we feel entitled to more, when we question why Allah hasn't given us this or that, when we feel deprived or sad about our circumstances, this narration stands as a profound reminder:
The most beloved person to Allah experienced the most difficult poverty.
The marks on his body weren't signs of divine displeasure; they were signs of divine selection.
The emptiness of his room wasn't evidence of abandonment; it was evidence of a heart so full of the akhirah that there was no space left for attachment to the dunya.
Sometimes the greatest wealth is found not in what we accumulate, but in what we choose to let go of.
Reflect On This:
👶 SunnahStories

Behind a shop where bread would bake, A honey jar sat near a cake. Its golden glow, its sugary scent, Drew flying guests wherever it went. A swarm of flies came buzzing near, Their wings abuzz with greedy cheer. "A little taste, no harm," they said, "Just dip a toe, then off to bed." They landed soft on sticky gold, The honey sweet, the jar not cold. "One more drop!" they said with glee, "We’ll feast and fly, just wait and see!" But oh! The honey held them fast, Their tiny feet were stuck like glass. Their wings were sealed, their joy turned pain, | They buzzed and squirmed, but all in vain. One fly cried out, “This seemed so fine! But now we’re trapped by treat and shine!”* On the sill sat one named Halim, Who watched the group like in a dream. "I warned you all to pause, be wise, Desire deceives in golden guise."* "Even blessings must be shared, Too much of joy leaves hearts ensnared."* The baker came with broom in hand, She cleaned the jar, then made her stand. She placed a lid, then turned away, While Halim buzzed into the day. His wings were free, his soul at rest, He’d passed the trial and passed the test. |

2️⃣ What happened when they tried to take more than a little?
3️⃣ How was Halim different from the other flies?
4️⃣ What lesson does the Qur’an teach us about excess and self-control?
5️⃣ Can you think of a time you had to say no to something tempting?
