If you must sit there, then observe the rights of the way.
The people had a place where they liked to talk. When the Prophet ﷺ warned them about sitting along the ways, they explained that these were their gathering places.
They wanted to stay. His answer made room in the conversation for everyone who would pass them.
The people asked what the way's rights were. He named lowering the gaze, avoiding harm, responding to greetings, encouraging good, and forbidding wrong.
The exchange turns our attention toward a person who has said nothing. The passerby needs the road, too, even while the friends are halfway through a story.
We know how easily a gathering spreads. A chair shifts away from the wall; a bag lands near the door; two people stop to finish a conversation where the path narrows.
Someone approaching with a stroller begins to look for another route. Someone using a walking aid slows down and waits to catch an eye.
At our own gatherings, avoiding harm can begin with noticing the person waiting to get through.
The friends may be speaking kindly and enjoying one another's company. They can keep that warmth while moving the chairs.
It is an easy adjustment when the group notices first. The person approaching can continue without having to interrupt everyone, explain a need, or accept a round of embarrassed apologies.
The narration also asks more of us than an open path. A restrained gaze, a greeting returned, and responsible concern for good conduct all belong to sharing the way.
We can begin by checking where our own feet and belongings rest. The story will still be there when we have moved a little closer to the wall.
