DAILYREFLECTION

And I do not seek to free myself from blame, for indeed the soul is ever inclined to evil, except those shown mercy by my Lord. Surely my Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Most of us know the pull that arrives on schedule. Mid-afternoon, or the quiet hour after the house goes still.

For one of us it reaches for a cigarette. For another, the freezer, the cart, the screen. The object changes from person to person; the pull is the same pull.

And most of us have run the willpower plan. A promise, three good days, then the same shelf, the same tab, and the quiet verdict that something in us must be broken.

Revelation reads the moment with more mercy than we read ourselves. The Qur'an gave this layer of the self its own name, the self that commands, and placed the words in the mouth of a prophet, spoken without a trace of despair.

So the commanding self is standard human equipment, present in the devout and the distracted alike. What differs between people is only who is holding the leash.

Even the body agrees on the mercy hidden here.

A craving is a wave: it rises, it crests, and when it is not fed, it passes. It only feels endless because so few of us have ever stood still long enough to watch one break.

The believer's work, then, is smaller than it looks. A named want. A replacement ready in its time slot. A few minutes of patience while the wave crests. And a whispered request for help from the One who made the nafs, this commanding self, and made its cure.

Every refused craving is quiet worship, counted even when no one sees it, tending the body the way the Beloved ﷺ taught us to hold a trust.

Reflect on this: When the pull arrives today, could we stand still and watch the wave break before deciding anything?
