The Sacred History of Dhul Hijjah

Help Build a Masjid in Kano

8 DAYS LEFT

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise."

Hundreds pray under a leaking stick-and-mud roof in Kano.

We've raised only $200 of our $20,000 goal with just 8 days remaining.

Your donation will reward you for every prayer performed, every child learning Quran, every believer finding community, and every life transformed for generations to come.

No deed is better in the sight of Allah or more greatly rewarded than a good deed done in the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah,

When the moon of Dhul Hijjah appears, we are not merely stepping into another month.

We are entering a sacred timeline where prophetic history converges with our present reality.

These are the very same days when the greatest souls experienced their most profound moments with Allah.

The Ka'bah: More Than Just a Building

The story of the Ka'bah is far richer than we often realize.

While we typically associate it with Ibrahim (AS), its origins stretch back to the dawn of humanity.

The angels themselves constructed the first house of worship at this site for Adam (AS) and Hawa.

Centuries later, Ibrahim (AS) didn’t build something new; he rediscovered and restored humanity's original spiritual home.

When we turn toward the Ka'bah, we are acknowledging our place in an unbroken spiritual lineage that began with our ancestors.

The Day Your Soul Made a Promise

Even forgotten experiences shape our present reality, but there is one experience we share that none of us consciously remembers: the Day of the Covenant.

Before we took our first breath, our souls already knew Allah.

On the day of Arafah, Allah gathered all human souls and asked, "Am I not your Lord?"

Every soul responded, "Yes, we testify!"

This is why Musa (AS), when asking Allah about the best remembrance on Arafah, was instructed to say, "La ilaha illallah."

With these words, we are renewing the very first promise our souls ever made.

Some spiritual traditions speak of "soul memory", the idea that our souls retain impressions from before our birth.

This may explain why standing on Arafah during Hajj often triggers such profound emotional responses.

It’s not just a ritual; it’s a homecoming, a recognition by our souls of a place they've been before.

The Prophetic Dhikr

The most powerful endorsement for any act of worship is that it was practiced by every messenger of Allah.

When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the remembrance for these 10 days, he made a remarkable statement:

"I and the prophets before me have not said anything better than

Lā ilāha illallāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ʻalā kulli shay’in qadīr.”

“There is no god worthy of worship except Allāh alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and praise, and He is able to do all things.”

When we recite these words during these sacred days, we are joining a spiritual chorus that includes every prophet who ever lived.

Musa's Forty-Day Journey to Eid

While we primarily associate Eid al-Adha with Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son, another prophetic connection is often overlooked: Musa's (AS) conversation with Allah.

The Quran describes how Allah appointed Musa (AS) for thirty nights, then completed them with ten more, forty in total.

Traditional scholarship identifies these as the month of Dhul Qa'dah, followed by the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

During this period, Musa (AS) fasted continuously in preparation for direct communication with Allah.

The culmination of this spiritual journey was a divine conversation that occurred on what we now celebrate as Eid al-Adha.

A Week of Multiple Divine Completions

The week stands as perhaps the most multi-layered sacred 10 days in our calendar.

Our souls testified to Allah's lordship in pre-existence.

Allah spoke directly to Musa (AS) after his forty-day spiritual journey.

Ibrahim (AS) demonstrated the pinnacle of submission through sacrifice.

And, centuries later, our religion was completed and perfected.

No other week carries so many prophetic connections and divine completions.

It’s as if, throughout human history, Allah has repeatedly chosen this specific time to mark humanity's most significant spiritual milestones.

👶 SunnahStories

Khalid the donkey ran wild and wide,

With wind on his back and no one to guide.

He laughed at reins and sneered at yoke,

And mocked the ones with harness and cloak.

"Why serve a man? Why carry grain?

I chase the hills and dodge the rain!"

"No whip, no rope, no stable wall—

I am my own, and that is all!"

But Harith the lion, wise and strong,

Watched Khalid dance and shout his song.

"You say you’re free, you boast and cheer,

But is your freedom truly clear?"*

*"Where do you sleep when night is cold?

Where do you go when wolves take hold?""I have my cave, I guard my land—*

But you, my friend, have shifting sand."*

Khalid paused—his pride grew still,

As shadows crept beyond the hill.

That night he shivered, lost and bare,

While danger growled through desert air.

In town, a donkey calm and tied,

Slept safe while grains and hay supplied.

Though burdened, he had peace and light—

His master praised Allah at night.

By dawn, young Khalid limped with shame,

His hooves now slow, his heart more tame.

"Perhaps," he said, "what I called chains—

Were blessings dressed in careful reins."

"Freedom," he sighed, "is not just flight—

But walking in what Allah made right."

Reflection Questions:

1️⃣ Why did Khalid the donkey believe he was better off than the village donkeys?

2️⃣ What did Harith the lion help him understand?

3️⃣ What danger did Khalid face while alone at night?

4️⃣ What does Islam teach us about structure, submission, and remembering Allah?

5️⃣ How can obedience sometimes be more freeing than doing whatever we want?
