DAILYREFLECTION

Do they not look at the sky above them, how We built it and adorned it, and it has no rifts?

Werner Heisenberg, one of the founders of quantum mechanics, said this: "The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you."

He was not speaking as a believer defending a position. He was describing what happens when you follow the scientific method honestly, all the way to its edge.

The numbers are worth sitting with. Life on this planet depends on the proximity of the Earth to the sun, the tilt of its axis, the speed of its rotation, the precise composition of the atmosphere, the thickness of the crust — and countless other variables that in some cases must be accurate to 120 decimal places for any of this to exist at all. Stephen Hawking, in his own words: "The values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life."

Finely adjusted. That phrase belongs to a physicist, not a theologian.

The scientific method is built to answer “how” — how forces interact, how matter behaves, how constants produce consequences. It does this with extraordinary precision. What it cannot answer is the why. Why do the constants have the values they have? Why does a universe governed by equations produce creatures who sit beneath a sky and ask what made it?

As brilliant and awe-inspiring as the discoveries of science can be, they can only ever speak to how things work in our universe, while God addresses why things exist.

The Bedouins had a simpler version of this argument. Camel droppings in the desert meant camels had passed. Footsteps in sand meant something had walked. The valleys, mountains, oceans, and constellations of this Earth point in the same direction. The precision is the footprint. The question is whose.

The Qur'an has been asking people to look at the sky, the rain, the structure of living things not to arrive at a formula, but to arrive at a recognition. The first gulp of science may feel like it closes that door. The people who drink to the bottom tend to find it open again.

Reflect on this:

After reading this, what is one sign of Allah you want to pay more attention to this week?
