The Prophet ﷺ shared a hadith in which on the Day of Judgment, Allah will say to a servant, "Oh son of Adam, I was hungry and you did not feed Me."

Confused, the servant will respond, "Ya Allah, how could I feed You when You are the Lord of all worlds?"

Allah will reply, "Don't you know that My servant was hungry? Had you fed him, you would have found My reward with Me."

Allah repeats this same exchange regarding thirst, explaining that helping the thirsty would have earned His reward.

But when it comes to the sick, something changes.

Allah says, "Oh son of Adam, I was sick and you did not visit Me."

When the confused servant asks how they could visit the Lord of all worlds.

Allah responds:

"Don't you know My servant was sick?

Had you visited him, you would have found Me with him."

Not just Allah's reward, but Allah Himself.

When you're lying in that bed, feeling weak and vulnerable, know you're not alone.

Allah is with you in a special way that differs from other forms of hardship.

The Angelic Witnesses

Two angels are specifically assigned to accompany the person who is sick.

They are witnesses, recording how we respond to our illness.

When someone visits and asks, "How are you feeling?" these angels listen intently to your answer.

We've all been there, right?

That moment when someone asks how we're doing while we're sick, and we have to decide: do we launch into a detailed complaint about every ache and pain, or do we respond with gratitude despite our discomfort?

This choice matters more than we realize.

Of course, you can describe your symptoms, explaining things like your fever, pain, or fatigue.

There's nothing wrong with sharing.

The key difference is the framework within which you share this information.

Are you speaking from a place of acceptance, framing your response with "Alhamdulillah" at its core?

Or are you complaining about your situation, rejecting what Allah has decreed?

When we respond with gratitude instead of complaint, acknowledging Allah's blessings even in our illness, these angels take our response directly to Allah.

Allah's response is beautiful.

He says:

"If I cause My servant to die from this illness, I will surely grant them Jannah. And if I heal them, I will replace their blood with something better, their flesh with something better, and wipe away their sins."

It's a complete renewal, spiritually and physically.

Illness becomes not just something to endure but an opportunity for transformation.

With each moment of discomfort, Allah is recreating us as better versions of ourselves.

The Modern Context: Beyond Physical Illness

In today's world, we understand illness extends beyond the physical.

Depression, anxiety, loneliness, these mental and emotional afflictions are no less real and often more isolating than physical ailments.

The weight of these struggles can feel overwhelming, crushing us under invisible burdens that others can't see.

Yet the same divine principle applies.

Whether battling cancer or depression, chronic pain or anxiety, Allah is present with us in that suffering.

Psychologists have a term called "post-traumatic growth," where individuals emerge from suffering with greater resilience, a deeper appreciation for life, and enhanced spiritual awareness.

This aligns perfectly with Allah's promise to replace what was lost with something better, and that with hardship, surely ease will come.

The illness that feels like it's breaking you down is, from a divine perspective, breaking you open, creating space for new growth, greater compassion, and deeper faith.

The Beautiful Exchange: Visiting the Sick

On the other hand, consider the extraordinary blessing that awaits those who visit the sick.

When you visit someone who's ill solely for Allah's sake, not just because they're family or you feel obligated, something amazing happens.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that 70,000 angels accompany you on that visit, all praying for you and seeking forgiveness on your behalf until the next day.

Picture a stadium packed, every fan chanting in unison. Feel the vibrations in your chest as the sound is so loud it drowns out the world.

Now replace that number with angels: wings beating in perfect harmony, voices combined in beautiful prayers for you, and their light stretching across the horizon.

All of this unfolds as you visit the sick person.

We eagerly give charity, fast voluntarily, pray night prayers, and feed the hungry, all beautiful acts of worship.

But how many of us make visiting the sick a regular spiritual practice?

This relatively simple act carries such enormous spiritual weight with Allah and emotional weight for the person you're visiting.

Perhaps its rarity makes it all the more valuable in Allah's sight.

Your brief visit doesn't just earn you the prayers of 70,000 angels; it brings immeasurable comfort to someone in their moment of vulnerability.

You become the means through which they experience human connection when they feel most isolated, reminding them they haven't been forgotten.

And Allah does not let you be forgotten either, drawing you ever closer to Him through your kindness.

Reflect On this:

  1. When was the last time you were ill?

How did you respond? Did you lean toward complaint or acceptance? And afterward, did that experience change you or give you a new perspective?

🎬️ Ready. Set. Action!

  1. Who in your circle might be feeling forgotten or isolated right now?

Reach out to them, a phone call or text is a start, and set an intention to visit them soon.

👶 SunnahStories

In forest green where breezes play,

Young Harith hopped through leafy day.

He munched on grass beneath a tree,

So calm, so still, so worry-free.

Then—*THUMP!* A sound from just behind!

He leapt in fear, he lost his mind.

“A sign!” he cried. “The end is near!

The earth is cracking! Run in fear!”

He darted fast through wood and glade,

While all the beasts grew sore afraid.

A deer then joined, a monkey too,

They all believed the tale was true.

A boar, a fox, a noisy goat—

All followed Harith’s fearful note.

The jungle shook with frightened feet,

They ran in herds down every street!

Then in the shade, with calm and grace,

Sat Asad Lion in his place.

“What brings this storm of fur and feet?”

He asked with voice so slow and sweet.

Harith cried, “The ground gave way!

A tree fell down! We mustn’t stay!”

The lion stood and said, “Let’s go—

We’ll find the truth and surely know.”

He led them back through branch and vine,

Past swaying leaf and forest line…

Until they saw beneath the tree—

A broken nut for all to see.

The lion smiled, “Now this we learn:

Don’t let your fears cause false concern.

Before you shout and tell the town,

First look, reflect, then settle down.”

Let truth, not fear, direct your track.

Reflection Questions:

1️⃣ What made Harith the rabbit think the world was ending?

2️⃣ Why did all the animals start running without checking?

3️⃣ What did the lion do differently?

4️⃣ What does Islam teach us about verifying news before spreading it?

5️⃣ How can we stop fear from spreading when we hear scary things?
