When the Caliph Punished His Own

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.

Sometimes the most powerful lessons come from the stories we'd rather not tell.

When Umar's (RA) own son committed serious crimes in Egypt, it became a test not just of Islamic justice, but of whether that justice applied even when it hurt the most.

First, a brief smile-worthy detail: Umar (RA) was so devoted to names beloved to Allah that he named three of his sons Abdur-Rahman.

Big Abdur-Rahman, Middle Abdur-Rahman, and Small Abdur-Rahman.

When the Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved names to Allah were Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, Umar (RA) took that very seriously.

But one of these Abdur-Rahmans would test his father's principles in the most painful way possible.

While in Egypt, Umar Ra’s son committed two major sins: he became intoxicated and committed adultery.

These weren't minor infractions or matters of opinion.

They were clear violations of Islamic law with prescribed punishments.

Amr ibn al-As (RA), as governor of Egypt, faced a delicate situation.

How do you punish the caliph's son?

His solution seemed diplomatically wise: carry out the punishment privately, make it somewhat symbolic rather than full force, and avoid creating a public scandal.

It was the kind of political calculation that occurs frequently when the children of powerful people get into trouble.

Handle it quietly, minimize embarrassment, and hope everyone moves on.

But Amr (RA) had forgotten who he was dealing with.

When Umar (RA) learned about both the crime and the inadequate punishment, He could let his son's preferential treatment slide.

He could have been quietly grateful that Amr (RA) had tried to spare the family embarrassment.

Instead, he summoned his son to Madinah and ordered that the punishment be carried out again.

This time publicly, with the same severity that would be applied to any other Muslim.

Picture Umar (RA) watching his son receive the punishment that Islamic law demanded.

This wasn't abstract justice anymore.

It was personal, painful, and public.

Every lash was a reminder that leadership means holding yourself and your family to the highest standards, not the lowest.

The same man who had ordered a governor's son to be whipped by the slave he had abused was now watching his own son face the consequences of his choices.

What makes this story even more powerful is its connection to the previous incident with Muhammad ibn Amr ibn al-As (RA).

Some might have thought Umar's (RA) harsh treatment of the governor's son was personal animosity or political calculation.

But when he applied the same uncompromising standard to his son, it became clear that this wasn't about personal relationships.

It was about the principle that Islamic law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their connections or bloodline.

Both situations involved the same lesson: justice cannot have exceptions based on family ties, political convenience, or social embarrassment.

The moment you create different standards for the powerful and the powerless, you no longer have justice.

You have organized corruption.

Strangely, Umar's (RA) harsh treatment of his son was the greatest gift he could give him.

By ensuring that Abdur-Rahman faced the full consequences of his actions, Umar (RA) was teaching him that true dignity comes from accepting responsibility, not from hiding behind privilege.

The public punishment was humiliating, but it was also purifying.

A chance for genuine repentance rather than the false comfort of preferential treatment.

Perhaps most remarkable of all is that Umar (RA) didn't see this as a conflict between his roles as father and leader.

For him, being a just leader meant being a just father, and being a just father meant holding his children to the same standards he expected from everyone else.

Reflect on this?

👶 SunnahStories

Where desert sands and waters meet,

A lion strong, a dolphin fleet.

With mighty paw and tail so free,

Each ruled their land—the land, the sea.

One day the lion roared and said,

"Let’s be as brothers till we’re dead!

If I need help, you shall be near,

And I will come when trouble’s here."

The dolphin smiled and bowed his head,

"I keep my word in all I’ve said.

But know, dear friend, the truth must be—

I swim the waves, I am not free!"

One day the lion faced a fight,

As wolves attacked him left and right.

He called, "O friend, come now, be true!"

But dolphins don’t have legs—it’s true!

The dolphin cried, "O king so bold,

I’d help if I could leave my hold!

A fish can’t climb, nor birds can dive,

It’s not a choice—it’s how we thrive!"

The lion paused and bowed in shame,

To blame his friend had been a game.

And so he learned, both wise and deep,

To make wise oaths and friendships keep.
