The Lion & the Mouse
A mighty lion learns that even the smallest friend can change everything.

Malik the lion lay in the long grass, half asleep, while the afternoon sun warmed his back. Somewhere close, a stream slid over stones. It was the kind of quiet he liked best.
Then something small and quick darted across his paw.
Malik's eyes opened. One heavy paw came down, and under it he felt a tiny, trembling shape.
"A mouse," he rumbled. "Who taught you to run across a sleeping king?"
"Forgive me." The mouse's name was Nabeel, and his whole body shook. "I wasn't looking. I'm small, and I meant no harm. Let me go, and one day I'll help you."
The lion laughed, a long low sound that rolled through his chest. "You? Help me?" But laughing had put him in a generous mood, and he raised his paw. "Go on, then."
Nabeel slipped into the grass. "Jazak Allahu khayran!" he called. (It means, "May Allah reward you with good.") Then he was gone.
Days passed. One evening, hunters strung a heavy net between the trees and crept off to wait. As the last light faded, Malik padded down his usual path and walked straight into it. Ropes snapped shut around his legs. He pulled, and the net only drew tighter. He threw his whole weight against it and roared until the valley rang, but the ropes held.
Far off, Nabeel heard that roar and knew it at once.
He ran. He found the great lion tangled and breathing hard, unable to move.
"Hold still," Nabeel said. "I'm here."
He set his teeth to the thickest rope and chewed. One strand frayed and gave way. Then another. His jaw ached and his teeth grew sore, but he kept going, and at last the net sagged loose.
Malik climbed slowly out of the ropes. He looked down at the small creature who had not run away.
"I called you too small to matter," the lion said quietly. "Today the smallest one set me free. Alhamdulillah."
Nabeel only smiled and brushed off his paws.
After that, the two were rarely apart: the mighty lion, and the little mouse who kept his promise.
"Whoever is not merciful to people, Allah will not be merciful to him."
