The adhan finishes. Maybe it came from the masjid down the road, maybe from the phone on the desk. We silence the notification, finish the email, and the moment closes without a word from us.
It happens five times a day, and it rarely feels like a loss, because nothing seemed to be on offer.
Something was. The du’a after the adhan is one sentence long, it takes about fifteen seconds, and the Prophet ﷺ attached his own intercession to it.
In short: The du’a after the adhan is a short supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ in Sahih al-Bukhari 614. It asks Allah to grant him al-wasilah, a rank in Paradise, and the praised station He promised him. He ﷺ said his intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be allowed for whoever says it.
The du’a after the adhan, in his ﷺ own words
Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, ‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-d-da`watit-tammah, was-salatil qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wab`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu’ … then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection.”
In plain English, the du’a means: O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer about to be established, grant Muhammad al-wasilah and high rank, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him.
Read it slowly and one thing stands out. There is no request in it for ourselves. No forgiveness asked, no provision, no relief. Every word is for him ﷺ.
Al-wasilah in the du’a after the adhan
Al-wasilah is the first of two phrases that carry the du’a, and both are worth knowing before we say them. The Prophet ﷺ explained this word himself. In a narration from Abdullah ibn Amr, he ﷺ described it as a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah’s servants, and said he hoped to be that one. Then he added that whoever asks Allah to give him al-wasilah will be assured of his intercession. The narration is Sahih Muslim 384.
Notice the humility in it. The best of creation ﷺ says “I hope,” and then asks his ummah, his community, to ask Allah on his behalf.
The praised station Allah promised him ﷺ
Al-maqam al-mahmud, the praised station, is the second phrase. Allah promised this to His Messenger ﷺ in the Qur’an, in the verse that tells him to rise for prayer in the night so that his Lord may raise him to a station of praise. Read Qur’an 17:79.
Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, described what that station looks like. On the Day of Resurrection people will fall to their knees, every nation following its prophet and pleading for someone to intercede, until intercession is given to the Prophet ﷺ. That, he said, is the day Allah raises him to the praised station. The narration is Sahih al-Bukhari 4718.
So the du’a after the adhan asks Allah to give His Messenger ﷺ the very position from which he will speak for his people. And he ﷺ told us that those who asked for it are among the people he speaks for.
Why a du’a for him ﷺ comes back to us
Shafa’ah is the Arabic word for intercession: one person speaking to Allah on behalf of another, by Allah’s permission. On a Day when every person is looking for someone to speak for them, the Prophet ﷺ has already told us, in this life, one way to be on his list.
The exchange is striking. We spend fifteen seconds wanting good for him. He ﷺ answers by wanting good for us, on the Day we need it more than any other.
Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ can feel like a feeling we are supposed to have and cannot measure. This sunnah gives that love words to say and a time of day to say them. Five times a day, the love has an appointment.
The full sunnah of answering the adhan
The du’a is the last of four small acts. The first three come from other authentic narrations, and together they take less than a minute beyond the adhan itself.
Repeat after the caller. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu’adh-dhin is saying.” The mu’adhdhin is the person who calls the adhan. The narration is Sahih al-Bukhari 611.
At “come to prayer,” admit where strength comes from. When the caller said hayya ’ala-s-salah, Mu’awiya, may Allah be pleased with him, replied “la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,” there is no might and no power except with Allah, and said they had heard the Prophet ﷺ say the same. This is in Sahih al-Bukhari 613.
Send salawat on him ﷺ. Salawat means asking Allah to bless the Prophet ﷺ. In the Muslim 384 narration above, he ﷺ said to repeat the adhan, then send blessings on him, and that whoever sends one blessing on him receives ten from Allah.
Say the du’a after the adhan. The fifteen seconds this whole piece is about.
Du’a between the adhan and the iqamah
Du’a of our own comes next, because the door stays open. A man once told the Prophet ﷺ that the callers to prayer had surpassed everyone else in reward. He ﷺ told him to say what they say, and when he reached the end, to ask, and it would be given to him. That is Sunan Abi Dawud 524, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani. He ﷺ also said, “The supplication made between the Adhan and Iqamah is not rejected,” in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 212, graded sahih. The iqamah is the second, shorter call made just before the prayer begins.
The order is beautiful. First we ask for him ﷺ. Then we are invited to ask for ourselves.
A small plan for the du’a after the adhan
A sunnah that arrives five times a day already has its own reminder built in. All that is left for us is to be ready when it sounds. It works the same way as using wudu, the washing before prayer, as an anchor for a new habit: the cue is already in the day.
Save the du’a where the eyes land. The lock screen works. So does a note on the fridge. The text to copy is just below this list. Do this once, today.
When the adhan ends, stop for fifteen seconds and read it. Reading from the screen is fine as a way to begin. Memory comes with repetition, and the adhan supplies the repetition.
Choose one anchor prayer. Maghrib is a good one, because the day’s work is usually loosening its grip by then. If the other four adhans get swallowed, that one still stands.
After a week, add one step backward. Repeat the adhan quietly along with the caller. A week later, add the salawat.

Some days we will catch one adhan out of five. That is still fifteen seconds spent asking Allah to honor the person we love most. A habit of the tongue grows the way a daily wird, a set portion of dhikr, the remembrance of Allah, grows: a little, kept.

Can we make our own du’a after it?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said the supplication between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected, and told a companion to answer the adhan and then ask.
The next adhan
Somewhere in the next few hours the call will sound again. It will last a couple of minutes, and then there will be a small silence.
Into that silence we can put one sentence for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He has told us where that sentence leads: to a Day when he stands in the station Allah promised him, and speaks for those who asked.
