DAILYREFLECTION

❝

Prepare food for the family of Ja'far for there came upon them an incident which has engaged them.

When news came that Ja'far had been killed, the Prophet ﷺ thought about his family's dinner.

Grief fills a house. The phone keeps ringing, and the children still get hungry.

He ﷺ asked the people around them to cook. His words are gentle: something has come upon them that keeps them busy.

Three days later he ﷺ came himself, asked for his brother's children and called a barber for them. Ja'far's son remembered the children being brought to him like little chicks.

From the outside, we send "let me know if you need anything," and we mean it.

Then we wait for a call that hardly ever comes.

People carrying something heavy rarely ask.

A death in the family. A newborn and no sleep. A parent home from hospital. A lost job.

A meal asks nothing back. They don't have to host you or return the dish.

Cook two dinners and leave them at the door. If you can't cook, have something delivered. Three weeks later, when the visitors have gone, do it again.

If they've lost someone, write on the lid the words he ﷺ sent his daughter as her child was dying: what Allah takes is His, what He gives is His, and everything with Him has its appointed time.

First step: tonight, before you cook your own dinner, text one family carrying something heavy and ask which evening you can leave a meal at their door.

He ﷺ asked for a grieving house to be fed. This week, you can answer that request for a family near you.

Reflect on this: Which family near me is too busy with something heavy to cook this week, and what can I bring them?
