Half of It Was Never Yours

By eleven at night you are tired, and very little of the tiredness was ever assigned to you.

The group chat spent the evening building a verdict about someone none of you have met. You gave forty minutes to a dispute between two organisations you do not belong to. Somewhere in there you settled a stranger's marriage in your head, on no evidence, at nobody's request.

None of it was sin exactly, and most of it was not even unkind. It just was not yours. You carried it anyway, and now there is nothing left for the two or three things that were.

We have a great deal of language for doing more, and almost none for doing less.

In the hadith the Prophet ﷺ puts the excellence somewhere unexpected. He does not name a deed to perform or an obligation to discharge. He praises a person for what he leaves. Part of ihsan lives in an omission: the religion counts what you do, and it also counts what you walked past and left alone.

The word is tark, a leaving, a relinquishing, and most people shrink it down to a rule about gossip. Gossip is the smallest part of it.

What does not concern you is whatever you are not answerable for and were never asked to carry. That reaches past your speech, into your attention, your curiosity, and the verdicts you keep private.

Silence alone does not settle it. You can say nothing all day with a running commentary going inside you, and you will have left nothing.

Before you pick a thing up, ask three questions. Am I responsible for this? Will knowing it change anything I do? Would the people inside it have chosen me?

There is mercy in a religion that credits omissions. On a day with no capacity for one more practice, something excellent is still open to you, and it costs nothing but the willingness to put a thing down.

Reflect on this: Name one thing you are carrying tonight that nobody handed you, and set it down before you sleep.
