DAILYREFLECTION

If anyone of you feels drowsy while praying he should go to bed till his slumber is over, because in praying while drowsy one does not know whether one is asking for forgiveness or for a bad thing for oneself.

The same thing is easy at ten in the morning and almost impossible at one.

Whatever ours is. The screen, the fridge, the message we should not send. At ten the pull passes. At one we are halfway in before anything objects.

Most of us decided long ago what that means. The night shows who we really are.

This narration suggests something far less dramatic.

Someone is in salah, and the Prophet ﷺ tells him to stop.

Not because a tired prayer counts for less. Because he cannot tell what he is saying. A person reaching for forgiveness may produce its opposite and never know.

If exhaustion can invert an act of worship already underway, then it is not a small variable in the spiritual life. It can reverse the output.

So the one o'clock collapse needs a different explanation.

Nobody concludes that a drowsy worshipper secretly hates the prayer. We conclude he is drowsy. The same reading is available for whoever folded last night, and almost none of us extend it to ourselves.

There is a mechanism. Under sleep loss the reactive part of the brain gets louder while its link to the regulating part gets thinner. The accelerator gains and the brake loses.

None of which removes responsibility. It relocates the repair. A faith problem and a sleep problem need different fixes, and only one has ever been solved by feeling worse.

Because many of us stay up to make up missed worship, resolve at midnight to be different, and hold our most searching self-examination in exactly the state this narration calls unfit for reciting a text we already know. Then we grade ourselves on the results.

Reflect on this: Name the hour tonight after which no decision gets made. Not no action, no decision. After it, the answer to every question about yourself is tomorrow.
