Two, and Allah is their third

Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, told this story himself.

He and the Prophet ﷺ had left Makkah in secret. The Quraysh wanted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dead and had sent men out to find him. The two of them took shelter in a cave on Mount Thawr, and they stayed there three nights while the search went on.

Then the searchers reached the cave. Abu Bakr could see their feet from where he sat. He turned to the Prophet ﷺ and said what any of us would have said: if one of them looks down, he will see us.

Think about who is speaking. This is the closest companion, the first man to believe, and his fear is real. The scholars point out that his worry was for the Messenger ﷺ more than for himself. The Qur'an preserves the moment, and records the Prophet ﷺ telling him: do not grieve, Allah is with us.

And then he ﷺ asked a question. What do you think of two, when Allah is their third?

Notice what the Prophet ﷺ did with the danger. The men were still outside. The cave was still small. He ﷺ changed the count. Abu Bakr had counted two men against many. The Prophet ﷺ counted again and included Allah, and once Allah is in the count, the sum is settled.

The Qur'an tells us what came next. Allah sent down His tranquility and supported His Messenger ﷺ with forces no eye could see. The searchers left. The road to Madinah opened, and with it everything that followed.

Each of us has a cave. A diagnosis, a debt, a child we cannot reach, a door that stays shut. We sit inside it and count: me against all of this.

They had planned the route, chosen the cave, and done everything that was theirs to do. Then, at the moment nothing more could be done, the Prophet ﷺ taught his friend how to count.
