The Hidden Treasure of Dhul Hijjah

Build a Masjid in Kano With Daily Sunnah & IUR

Hundreds of villagers sit under a flimsy stick-and-mud roof just to pray and learn.

A makeshift hut can’t stop their devotion, but it limits their potential.

Help us build a sturdier prayer and learning center in Kano, with dedicated study rooms and wudu stations.

Insha’Allah, your donation becomes a continuous charity, blessing countless lives.

There are no days during which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days

The companions of the Prophet ﷺ were no strangers to sacrifice.

They had left behind their homes, wealth and had gone to war for the sake of their faith.

So, when they heard about the exceptional status of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, their immediate question was, "Not even Jihad in the path of Allah?"

The Prophet ﷺ responded with clarity and firm conviction: "Not even Jihad in the path of Allah," with only one exception, the person who gives everything for Allah and returns with nothing.

Dhul Hijjah's first days arrive quietly, offering their treasures to those who are attentive enough to notice.

The early Muslims certainly noticed.

Ibn Abbas (RA), the narrator of the hadith, was so absorbed in worship during these ten days that he would completely disappear; no one could even find him.

A Quiet Opportunity for Reflection

Unlike Ramadan, which envelops us in a communal atmosphere of worship, Dhul Hijjah often passes with minimal fanfare, particularly the first eight days.

But that’s exactly what makes these days such a powerful indicator of our spiritual sincerity.

It’s easy to worship when everyone around us is doing so, and Ramadan shows us the beauty of collective worship.

However, spiritual depth emerges when we strive in those quiet moments.

When we’re alone, when the atmosphere isn't charged with the collective energy, and when it’s just us and our Creator.

In many ways, how we approach Dhul Hijjah tests our depth and love much more than our Ramadan experience.

Why These Ten Days Stand Apart

1. The Completion of Our Religion

These days have witnessed the completion of our religion. Allah revealed,

“This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam for you as your religion.” (Quran 5:3)

The divine act of completing His favor upon us during these days signals their extraordinary nature.

2. The Presence of All Pillars

As Ibn Hajar explained, "All of the pillars are present in these ten days in a way they are not combined at any other time."

  • The Shahada resonates powerfully on Arafah.

  • Our daily prayers continue.

  • The best voluntary days to fast, especially on Arafah.

  • Charity flows through the sacrifice.

  • Hajj itself unfolds for those blessed to attend.

Perhaps the most compelling endorsement of these days comes from Allah Himself, who swears by them in the Quran.

When the Creator of the universe takes an oath by something, He is shining a spiritual spotlight on it, urging us to "Pay attention to this!"

👶 SunnahStories

Behind a shop where bread would bake,

A honey jar sat near a cake.

Its golden glow, its sugary scent,

Drew flying guests where’er it went.

A swarm of flies came buzzing near,

Their wings abuzz with greedy cheer.

"A little taste, no harm," they said,

"Just dip a toe, then off to bed."

They landed soft on sticky gold,

The honey sweet, the jar not cold.

"One more drop!" they said with glee,

"We’ll feast and fly, just wait and see!"

But oh! The honey held them fast,

Their tiny feet were stuck like glass.

Their wings were sealed, their joy turned pain,

They buzzed and squirmed, but all in vain.

One fly cried out, “This seemed so fine!

But now we’re trapped by treat and shine!”*

On the sill sat one named Halim,

Who watched the group like in a dream.

"I warned you all to pause, be wise,

Desire deceives in golden guise."*

"Even blessings must be shared,

Too much of joy leaves hearts ensnared."*

The baker came with broom in hand,

She cleaned the jar, then made her stand.

She placed a lid, then turned away,

While Halim buzzed into the day.

His wings were free, his soul at rest,

He’d passed the trial and passed the test.

Reflection Questions:

1️⃣ Why did the flies land in the honey pot?

2️⃣ What happened when they tried to take more than a little?

3️⃣ How was Halim different from the other flies?

4️⃣ What lesson does the Qur’an teach us about excess and self-control?

5️⃣ Can you think of a time you had to say no to something tempting?
